At the conclusion of what was the largest-ever gathering of world leaders, delegates to the UN Millennium Summit unanimously adopted the "United Nations Millennium Declaration", which redefined the "Role of the United Nations in the 21st Century" and reaffirmed Member States' commitment to world economic and social development.
The Millennium Declaration reiterated previous pledges to "halve by 2015 , the proportion of the world's people whose income is less than one dollar a day and the proportion of people who suffer from hunger and, by the same date, to halve the proportion of people who are unable to reach or to afford safe drinking water." The Summit declared that the central challenge of today was to ensure that globalization becomes a positive force for all. (UN Press Release GA/9758) (Click here for more)
