Bangladesh - formulating food security policy

Title: Local Consultative Group (LCG) Sub-Group on Food Security and Nutrition
Established: 1997
Membership: UN, government, civil society, donors

The ACC Network Thematic Group in Bangladesh - known as the Local Consultative (LCG) Sub-Group on Food Security and Nutrition - is co-chaired by WFP and FAO and has been focusing on food availability and nutrition issues.

The LCG has taken the lead in formulating the 'Comprehensive Food Security Policy' for Bangladesh, a follow-up to the draft Strategy for Agricultural Development - Horizon 2010. The policy recommendations include monitoring incentives for domestic food production to ensure availability of food and increased rural income; emergency preparedness; targeting food insecure households; promoting income growth of the poor; strengthening nutrition education; and increasing investment in rural infrastructure and social services. It is anticipated that major donors, the World Bank, USAID, WFP, the EU and other partners will contribute to completing this document.
