Kenya - coordinating UN collaborative programmes in poverty alleviation |
Title: Natural Resources and Rural Development Theme Group |
The establishment of the Thematic Group in 1998 was part of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) process in the country. It is probably for this reason that the Group has strong networking capacities: not only does it have a representative of the Integrated Regional Information Network (IRIN/DHA) as a member but it also interacts with the Food for All Committee and five UNDAF Theme Groups in Kenya.
The Group has coordinated a four -year collaborative programme (FAO / UNIFEM / UNDP/ UNSO) on increasing rural incomes and sustainable natural resource use through Farmers' Field Schools managed by womens' groups. In July 2000, it initiated support to collaborative work on poverty reduction through drought preparedness and irrigation being undertaken by FAO, WFP, UNDP, NGOs and government and district authorities. It is hoped that this collaborative programme would inter alia expand and strengthen Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping Systems (FIVIMS).
