Nicaragua - collaborating for policy discussion on rural food security

Title: Thematic Group on Rural Development and Food Security
(Grupo Tématico sobre Desarrollo Rural y Seguridad Alimentaria - DRYSA)
Established: 1999
Membership: UN, government, civil society, donors

The Thematic Group works in close collaboration with national authorities responsible for rural development and food security: for example, it has acted as a direct supervisor to the Government in the preparation of a project for a Bill on Food Security. Moreover, the Group has stimulated debate on strategies for national agricultural development amongst relevant authorities, and involving the participation of representatives of various development stakeholders in the country. This dialogue continues in the context of evaluating the progress reached in following up the WFS Plan of Action and preparing the Government of Nicaragua for its participation in World Food Summit: Five Years Later (WFS: fyl) Currently, the Group is also working on a report on public expenses for rural development in Nicaragua that will provide elements for discussion at the national and regional level.
