Uruguay - promoting the participation of civil society
|
Title: Thematic Group on Rural Development and Food Security |
The Thematic Group in Uruguay is comprised of all UN agencies in the country and is actively seeking and encouraging the participation of civil society in its initiatives. As a theme for action, the Group has chosen follow-up to the WFS Plan of Action and the commitments at the national level. This has been the spur for various meetings attracting the involvement of NGOs and CSOs, government and university bodies, such as the recent national workshop, 'Productive Alliances for Food Security and Sustainable Rural Development' held in May with the support of the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and under the auspices of the Thematic Group. The workshop is set to evaluate the experiences and strategies of national producers and will ultimately prepare a report on the state of food insecurity and the rural sector in Uruguay. It is hoped that the conclusions of the workshop will be used as working material for the National Committee of the World Food Summit: Five Years Later (WFS: fyl).
The workshop will also be an opportunity to present the aims and objectives of the Thematic Group in Uruguay and the idea is to incorporate the National Committee for NGO/CSO Coordination (Comité Nacional de Coordinadoras de ONGs y OSCs) into the membership of the Thematic Group.
