Thematic Working Group on Poverty Alleviation and Food Security (TWG-PARF)
Established: 1999/2000
Membership: UN
Activities
The Group is chaired by FAO and is co-chaired by ILO, UNDP and ESCAP. In the period 2000 to 2002, the Group was known as TWG-PARF.
After a brief period of transition, in 2002 the TWG was renamed, by deleting rural development in to “UN Thematic Group on Poverty Alleviation and Food Security” or TWG-PRFS. The new UN TWG adopted in a recent meeting in July 2003 a draft concept of a new joint pilot program, which will be used as a guiding working document for preparation of a more detailed project proposal focusing on poverty alleviation and food security activities at village level in selected poorest districts.
The pilot programme will be aimed at implementing an effective UN joint pilot intervention through their concerted efforts in order to alleviate poverty through the promotion of food security for the rural poor and to identify a model for a joint UN intervention for possible replication at country/regional level.
A small working group of UN thematic working group members including ILO, UNICEF, ESCAP and FAO, will develop the project proposal and seek necessary funding. The joint pilot programme is expected to cover a three-year period starting in January 2004.
