World Environment Day: "Give Earth a Chance", 5 June 2002
World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5 June. Under the slogan "Give Earth a Chance", this year's World Environment Day calls on everyone to contribute to healing the planet that still suffers from many of the environmental problems of the 20th century (land degradation, deforestation, global warming, water scarcity, desertification, etc.).
World Environment Day was established 20 years ago by the United Nations General Assembly at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. It is one of the United Nations' principle vehicles for drawing worldwide attention to, and enhancing political awareness of, the environment.
The aim is to empower people as active agents of sustainable and equitable development and promote the idea that people and communities are at the centre of changing attitudes towards the environment.
The observance of World Environment Day involves colourful activities such as green concerts, tree planting, clean-up campaigns, bicycle parades, street rallies, essays and poster competitions in schools, etc. In many countries, World Environment Day also provides an occasion for the signing of international conventions on environmental issues.
