The building of sustainable development: seven sheets on the concept of sustainable development

In the last few years, numerous governments, international organizations, representatives of civil society, etc. have rallied for the cause of sustainable development.

But what exactly is meant by the words "sustainable development"? What lurks within this concept adopted lately as the banner of all local, national and international political propositions?

The French NGO
Solagral has prepared a series of papers intended to elucidate and stir debate on some of the components of this phenomenon. "The building of sustainable development" is a dossier divided into seven sheets which present, among other themes: the implications of international trade in sustainable development (profitability vs. sustainability); the theme of the fight against poverty as a priority aim for sustainable development; the relationship between sustainable development and human rights; the new role of the private sector, including the new obligations which this sector must assume in order to make sustainable development global; and the theme of the governability as well as the decisions and responsibilities that must be assumed at the local and global levels.
