ProPoor Info Tech Centre launches a web Site on NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) across South Asia

ProPoor InfoTech Centre has launched an information portal (
http://www.propoor.org) catering to the needs of South Asian NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan). The ProPoor portal provides comprehensive information on South Asian Non Governmental / voluntary organizations, donors and funding agencies, events across the world, projects and jobs supporting sustainable development initiatives for the marginalized sectors of the society. "South Asian development news" is updated on the portal everyday. Appeals and Success Stories of individuals or organisations are put up on a weekly basis. ProPoor provides a free website to each & every organisation enlisted on its database. As of November 2002, ProPoor catered to over 13,700 South Asian organisations and hosted details of more than 11,100 individuals working in the social sector.

The main objectives of the initiative are to serve as a clearing house of information on the activities of the organisations working in the field of social development, to assist organizations representing the poor to communicate with Government agencies and donor organizations, as well as to provide a platform for increased interaction in forums and discussions. ProPoor intends to become a constructive platform for mobilization of a large online constituency for social change.
