The state of food and agriculture: SOFA-2002

Recently, the report on the state of world food and agriculture for the year 2002 was presented, this being one of the banner publications of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The annual report, which not only reviews the situation of agriculture but analyses world economy in relation to agriculture and trade as well as the repercussions of the Fourth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on agriculture, constitutes reference material for all partners working for food security.

The report for 2002 includes two special themes: "The role of agriculture and land in the provision of public goods" and "Harvesting carbon sequestration through land-use change: A way out of poverty?" In addition, the report provides detailed treatment of specific issues of each region, such as land reform in central and eastern European countries and the CEI, or repercussions of China's membership in the World Trade Organization.
