El Salvador reactivates its national Thematic Group
The Network affiliated Group in El Salvador, known as Comité de Desarrollo Rural (CDR) was established in 1997 as a "limited committee" for country consultants on rural development issues.
It subsequently grew to include other actors and partners of society, civil society and donors working actively as key partners of the government on food security and rural development issues. The CDR has notably drafted two documents giving guidance to policy makers: "Guidelines for a Rural Development Strategy" (1999) and "Policy Proposals" (2000).
Due to structural transformation processes in the CDR and the two earthquakes which occurred in January and February 2001 the Group's activities were temporarily suspended. Initiatives to reactivate the CDR have been taking place since November 2002. A small group which includes participants of the prior CDR and new members, prepared and distributed a questionnaire among different institutions to establish the possible vision, mission and strategic areas of action of the renewed CDR.
In order to involve other society partners such as civil society organizations and other institutions in participating in the CDR, a two-day National Workshop is also being organized with the support of the FAO office in El Salvador.
